American Beauty live-read cast features Bryan Cranston

Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks, Woody Harrelson and CBC’s George Stroumboulopoulos will star in TIFF’s surprise live reading of American Beauty hosted Thursday by Juno director Jason Reitman.

The film, about the dark side of American suburbia, premiered at TIFF 13 years ago and netted Oscars for director Sam Mendes, writer Alan Ball and lead actor Kevin Spacey.

Since last October, Montreal native Reitman has organized and narrated the stage directions for a series of live-reads with A-list actors in Los Angeles, including The Breakfast Club with Jennifer Garner, Shampoo with Bradley Cooper and Kate Hudson, and The Big Lebowski with Seth Rogen.

For the Toronto live-read premiere on stage Thursday at the Ryerson Theatre, the former Ryerson student puts Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) in the lead role of Lester Burnham, a mid-level advertising executive in the throes of a mid-life crisis who becomes infatuated with his daughter’s friend Angela.

Playing Burnham’s bitter and unfaithful wife Carolyn is sultry Christina Hendricks of Mad Men fame.

Toronto-born Sarah Gadon (Cosmopolis) steps into Mena Suvari’s shoes as Angela Hayes, the teen object of Lester’s rose-petal-filled sexual fantasies and his daughter’s cheerleader best friend.

Lester’s rebellious and introverted daughter Jane (originally played by Thora Birch) will be read by Mae Whitman (Amber in Parenthood).

Ricky, played by Wes Bentley in the film, will be read by Adam Driver, best-known as Hannah’s sort-of boyfriend in HBO sitcom Girls.

Woody Harrelson plays Ricky’s abusive, homophobic, gun-collecting ex-marine father Col. Frank Fitts.

It’s Harrelson that Strombo is most excited to join on stage — the CBC talk show host has a smaller role in the live-read playing Jim Olmeyer, one half of a happy, normal gay couple (both named Jim) who are neighbours to the Burnhams.

Stroumboulopoulos, who says the group won’t do any rehearsal before Thursday, describes the enduring impact of American Beauty.

“I remember watching it and talking to friends who were roughly the same age as Spacey was,” he says. “I remember really enjoying the film, but there was an uneasiness and almost panic in these guys’ eyes because they could almost relate to that. And I remember saying I can’t wait to experience this movie when I’m older.

“And I mean, to be part of that dialogue. It’s poetic and fluid, but when you cut through the cinema of it, it’s severe. It’s heavy to carry around with you because it’s real, you know. This a simple guide to help collectors and enthusiasts to buy air jordan shoes. I think to hear rather than see it in the cinema sense, is going to leave different mark on the audience.”

The women today were real worked up

I'm the only male teacher in my school. It's been that way through most of my career. And let me tell you, when the only male around is gay, the women let their hair down. They basically talk as though you aren't there.,nike air max shoes are the immortal Nike creation. I mean, occasionally they will be talking about their hot flashes, or menopause or....dear God not this topic again, Vaginal dryness, and then they'll glance over and see me there (spoon hovering half way to my mouth, look of shock on my face as my extremely visual mind is trying to NOT hear what they are saying) and I'll see this funny look flicker across their faces "Oh my God! I forgot there is a man in the room!" but then they remember it is me and they usually just continue on.

Because of this I have become very knowledgeable on many different subjects.Shop for Womens nike dunk high shoes, Lazy husbands and good for nothing men, menopause, feminine care products that are good, feminine care products that should be avoided (anything available in the school's vending machines, apparently, should be avoided at all cost-"scritchy" is one of the descriptive terms that have been used but I didn't ask for details) cute hair styles,,air jordan cheap shoes for sale at online jordan store. terrible new haircuts on a coworker or star in whatever People or US the person is looking at, that adult women should never wear Wednesday Adam braids, diets, children and fashion.

Today there was this very strange energy. Everyone had one thing they wanted to talk about and it was Michelle Obama. They discussed her hair (very cute and super glossy) her makeup (she looked flawless) her dress (they all LOVED it) her shoes, her beauty... but I could tell that these women had been moved. They were.women's high dunk high sneakers with patent...I don't know how to say it...energized on the same level. They were all beaming and it was similar to how a woman shines when she tells you something really cool that one of their kids did. And then they talked about her speech and, as the only dude and on the outside of the vibe that was going on, I sort of struggle to put what it means into words but I'll try.

I think the women bonded fiercely over Michelle Obama's speech last night. I've never seen them speak so highly of anyone before. I've never seen them so political. I think the battle cry has been raised and it was Michelle Obama who raised it. It is she that may well have galvanized many independent women to move, en masse, into full support of the President.

I struggle to give you the visual of what it felt like. A French painting of Mrs. Obama, twisting red flags held high above her head (with flawless makeup and cute hair), leading an army of women into a fiery red battle? An Olympic Mrs Obama sprinter tearing up the track and handing off the baton to the President with a ten second lead as the crowd roars in the background. You get my picture though.... the women in my building seemed to have experienced a shared bonding experience.

And pardon any sexist attitudes you might see in this. Of course the topics discussed in front of me also contain work, finances, highbrow art and science talks and every other topic available under the sun. But, as the only male teacher I stand by my claims that women like to talk about fashion, hair, makeup, menopause, cute guys and perky butts (at least some of the time). (and, to be fair, I joined the conversation twice, to point out the shoes were from J. Crew and that I liked that bouncy curl that kept flying away from her face. It was kicky and youthful, in my opinion).

Hooper primed for breakdown battle in Perth

Young Wallabies flanker Michael Hooper will attempt to replicate David Pocock's heroic World Cup quarter-final performance when he lines up in Saturday night's Rugby Championship clash with South Africa in Perth.

Pocock was at his pilfering best against the Springboks at last year's World Cup, with his dominant display at the breakdown lifting Australia to an unlikely 11-9 victory despite the Boks dominating the match.

With Pocock nursing a knee injury that has ruled him out of the remainder of the Rugby Championship, 20-year-old Hooper knows he has big shoes to fill as the Wallabies attempt to win the crucial breakdown battle against the Springboks.

The Boks have opted against using a specialist openside flanker in recent games in the injury-enforced absence of their specialist Heinrich Brussow and Hooper senses that creates an opportunity.

But he is also bracing himself for a physical battering from the bigger-bodied Springboks who played 194cm tall Jacques Potgieter in the openside No.,nike air max shoes are the immortal Nike creation.7 jersey in their last-start, 16-all draw in Argentina.

"I guess when you're going for a turnover or putting your head in the breakdown, they come in flying," Hooper said on Wednesday.

"But in saying that, you've got a bit of an opportunity, women's high dunk high sneakers with patent. a bit of a window to force a turnover, because they are bigger blokes.

"They probably will be a step or two (slower) than if they were playing a traditional seven.

"There's opportunities there, but you've got to be prepared to be belted."

Hooper grew up idolising Wallabies great George Smith, and said the 32-year-old gave him a call recently to wish him all the best when he replaced the injured Pocock for the last Test loss to the All Blacks.

"It was nice to hear from a legend like him," Hooper said. "He gave me some little words of wisdom about what to expect.

"I got to spend his last year in Australia with him down at the Brumbies and I learned a lot off him.

"He's a great bloke off the field as well as player on."

The Wallabies have recalled fullback Kurtley Beale for Saturday's match, while Adam Ashley-Cooper reverts to outside centre after the more defence-oriented Rob Horne was dropped from the squad altogether.

No.8 Radike Samo replaces Scott Higginbotham in the starting line-up, although Higginbotham is expected to play the bulk of the second half.

The Wallabies have won their past four games against South Africa, air jordan for cheap but coach Robbie Deans said that winning run would count for little ahead of their latest encounter.

"At the end of the day it doesn't matter," Deans said.

"The players understand that when you play the Springboks, you plaShop for Womens nike dunk high shoes,y a side that's always committed and you've got to earn everything you get, and it won't be any different on Saturday.
